After studied at the École d’Art lyrique at Opéra de Paris, Jérôme Varnier made his debut as Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) at Opéra de Lyon, where he was an ensemble member (1995–2000), appearing in many productions.
Since, he has performed more than seventy roles, including Seneca(L’Incoronazione di Poppea) in Bordeaux, Marcel (Les Huguenots) at Brussels la Monnaie and Nice, Cardinal Brogni (La Juive) at Opéra du Rhin, Frère Laurent (Roméo et Juliette by Gounod and Berlioz), Banquo (Macbeth) and Ramfis (Aida), Colline (La Bohème) in Paris Opéra Comique, Lyon, Bordeaux, Arkel (Pelléas et Mélisande) at Leipzig, Paris, Brussels, London, Lyon. He has also sung on the following stages: Opéra de Paris, Toulouse Théâtre du Capitole, Theater an der Wien, Amsterdam Dutch National Opera, Milan Teatro alla Scala as well as Festival d’Aix en Provence and Festival Radio France et Montpellier.
He has performed his first Méphistophèles in Gounod’s Faust in Avignon, Stravinsky’s Renard in Paris with Ensemble Intercontemporain and Arkelat the Sydney Opera House, in Bordeaux, Paris Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, in Bordeaux, at Kanazawa Festival and the Tokyo Opera City. Melchthal (Guillaume Tell) at Theater an der Wien, le Spectre (Hamlet) at the Paris Opéra Comique, and recently his first Sarastro in Tours, also Caronte in a concert version of l’Orfeo at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Crespel (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) in Bordeaux.
In the future, he will perform in Jeanne d’Arc au Bûcher at la Monnaie, in Orfeo in Toulouse and Geneva, Muphti in a tour of Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, in Pelléas et Mélisande in Bordeaux.
